About this tool
A fuel cost calculator tells you how much a drive will cost in fuel, so you can budget a trip, compare driving with the train or split gas money with friends.
Enter the one-way distance in kilometers, your car's fuel economy in kilometers per liter, the price of one liter, whether the trip is one-way (1) or round trip (2) and how many people share the cost.
The formula is: liters needed = distance x trips / fuel economy, and fuel cost = liters x price per liter.
For example, 120 km each way, 12 km/L and 1.5 per liter, driven as a round trip, uses 240 / 12 = 20 liters and costs 30; shared by 3 people that is 10 each. How do I find my fuel economy?
Fill the tank, drive a few hundred kilometers, fill it again and divide the distance by the liters added, or read the average on your dashboard. Why is my real cost higher?
Traffic, speed, air conditioning, heavy loads and cold weather all lower the economy, so use a realistic number. Tolls, parking and wear on the car are not included.
The fuel price is a number you type, not a live price, so check the current price at the pump. If you drive an electric car, use your cost per kilometer in place of the fuel price and set the economy to 1.
Results are estimates for planning only. Everything is calculated in your browser. For splitting other costs try the Dutch Pay Calculator, or the Unit Converter for miles and gallons.
