About this tool

This image compressor reduces the file size of a photo or picture right in your browser, so it is a quick way to compress a JPG that is too big to email or upload.

Choose an image, move the quality slider, press Compress and you see the size before and after, such as 3.4 MB to 620 KB. Nothing is uploaded and no account is needed.

How does it make the file smaller? The picture is redrawn on a canvas and saved again as JPG or WebP at the quality you chose. Lower quality throws away fine detail the eye rarely notices, which cuts the size a lot.

WebP is usually smaller than JPG at a similar look, but a few older programs cannot open it, so pick JPG when you are unsure.

What quality should I pick? For everyday photos, 60 to 80 is a good start: the file often shrinks to a fifth with little visible change. Below 40 you may see blocky edges.

If the result gets bigger than the original, which can happen with PNG screenshots or already-compressed files, keep the original instead. Does my original change? No.

The tool only creates a new file for download, so your original stays as it is. Compress from the original each time, because saving a lossy file again and again slowly lowers its quality.

Saving also removes hidden camera data such as GPS location. If the file is still too large, make the picture smaller as well with the Image Resizer, since fewer pixels matter more than quality.

For exact thumbnail sizes, try the YouTube Thumbnail Resizer. Photos over 50 MB or 25 megapixels are skipped to keep your device responsive. Transparent backgrounds turn white when saved as JPG.

Your image never leaves your device. All work happens in your browser.

How to use

  1. Choose an image or drag and drop it (JPG, PNG or WebP).
  2. Pick JPG or WebP and move the quality slider (60-80 is a good start).
  3. Press Compress image, compare the sizes, then download the new file.
