About this tool
A resume character counter tells you how long your cover letter or self-introduction really is, which matters because many application forms stop you at a fixed limit such as 500, 1,000 or 2,000 characters.
Paste your text and you see the count with spaces, the count without spaces, the number of bytes and the number of lines at the same time.
Some forms count Korean and other non-ASCII characters as 2 bytes while UTF-8 uses 3, so you can switch the byte rule, and you can also decide whether a line break counts as 1 or 2 bytes.
Then enter the limit of your form, choose whether it is measured in characters or bytes, and the gauge turns amber near the limit and red when you are over. How do I count characters without spaces?
Use the second tile, which ignores spaces, tabs and line breaks. Why does my number differ from the company's form?
Companies count differently, especially for line breaks and emoji, so always trust the rule printed on the form. For ordinary word and sentence counts, try the Word Counter on this site.
For a simple example, the text "안녕 abc" and a line break is 7 characters with spaces and line breaks counted as one each. Your text is processed only in your browser and is never sent to a server or saved.
How to use
- Paste your cover letter or resume text into the box.
- Pick the byte rule (2 or 3 bytes) and the line-break rule that match your application form.
- Enter the limit, choose characters or bytes, and watch the gauge to trim your text.
