About this tool

This text to speech tool reads any text aloud in your browser, so you can turn a message, an article or study notes into spoken words.

It is also called a text reader, TTS or read aloud online. Paste your text, pick a voice, set the speed and pitch, and press Read aloud.

It uses the speech engine already built into your phone or computer, so there is nothing to install, no account and no server. Is my text sent anywhere? No.

The page asks your own browser to speak, and this site never sends or stores your text.

Note that some browsers offer online voices that are processed by the browser maker's servers, so pick a device (local) voice for sensitive text. We do not use an outside voice service or keys.

Why do voices sound different on each device? The voice list comes from your device, not from this page.

iPhones, Android phones, Windows, Mac and Chromebooks each ship different voices, and some are far more natural than others. If a voice sounds robotic, open the Voice menu and try another one.

Voices for your current language are listed first. If a language has no voice on your device, you may need to add one in the system settings.

How do I make it slower or easier to follow? Lower the speed to about 0.8 when you are studying a new language or proofreading, and raise it to 1.3 or more when you only want to skim.

Pitch changes how high the voice sounds; keep it near 1 for the most natural result. For example, a 300-word article at normal speed takes roughly two to three minutes. Can I save the sound as an MP3? No.

This tool plays sound only and does not record or create audio files. Use it for listening, checking how a sentence flows, or giving your eyes a rest.

Tips and limits: you can enter up to 5,000 characters at a time, and long text is read in small pieces so it does not stop halfway. Use Pause to stop for a moment and Stop to start over.

If you hear nothing, check your volume, and on iPhone turn off silent mode. Also avoid reading private passwords or numbers aloud in public places.

How to use

  1. Type or paste your text (up to 5,000 characters), or press Sample text.
  2. Choose a voice, then set the speed and pitch with the sliders.
  3. Press Read aloud. Use Pause to wait a moment and Stop to start over.
