About this tool

A TDEE calculator estimates your total daily energy expenditure, the calories your body uses in a normal day including movement, so it is also called a daily calorie or maintenance calorie calculator.

It first finds your basal metabolic rate with the Mifflin-St Jeor equation, 10 x weight (kg) + 6.25 x height (cm) - 5 x age, then adds 5 for men or subtracts 161 for women, and multiplies it by an activity factor: 1.2, 1.375, 1.55, 1.725 or 1.9.

For example, a 35-year-old man who is 175 cm and 75 kg has a BMR of about 1,674 kcal, and with moderate exercise (x1.55) a TDEE of about 2,594 kcal. What is the difference between BMR and TDEE?

BMR is the energy at complete rest, while TDEE adds daily movement and exercise on top. Which activity level should I pick?

Choose the one that matches a normal week, and go lower if you are unsure, since people tend to overestimate. How accurate is it?

Muscle mass, genes and health change real needs, so the tool also shows a rough range of plus or minus 10 percent. If you only want the resting figure, see our BMR calculator.

Results are estimates for healthy people aged 18 and over aged 18 and over, are for reference only and do not replace a doctor or dietitian. Nothing you enter leaves your browser.

The figure is an estimate of calories used, not a recommended intake.
