About this tool

A Korean name to English converter turns a name written in Hangul into Latin letters using the Revised Romanization of Korean, the official spelling system for Korean.

People search for how to write a Korean name in English when they fill in a passport form, a visa application, a school record or an overseas account.

For personal names the rule works syllable by syllable and does not apply sound changes, so Hong Gil-dong is written Hong Gil-dong even if the spoken sound shifts.

A hyphen between the given name syllables is allowed, which is why both Gil-dong and Gildong are seen, and you can switch the hyphen on or off here.

Surnames are different because many families have used one spelling for generations. Kim is almost always Kim, but Lee can also be Yi or Rhee, Park can be Bak, and Jung, Yoon or Choi have several forms in use.

This tool lists the usual surname spellings for more than a hundred common surnames and compound surnames such as Namgung and Hwangbo, so you can pick the one you already use.

You also get the name in surname-first order, given-name-first Western order, all capitals as printed on forms, and an alternate vowel spelling, each with a copy button.

An English passport name is hard to change once it is set, so match your existing passport and English documents first. Names are processed in your browser and are never sent or saved.

The results are a reference only and are not an official document.

How to use

  1. Type the Korean name in Hangul, surname first, like 홍길동.
  2. Pick the surname spelling you already use (for example Lee, Yi or Rhee) and turn the hyphen in the given name on or off.
  3. Tap Copy next to the format you need. Match your existing passport spelling if you have one.
