About this tool
Proverb Fill in the Blank is a free daily quiz built on familiar sayings.
Each day you see a well-known proverb with one word missing, such as "A bird in the hand is worth two in the ___", and you try to supply the missing word.
If you like proverb quizzes, idiom games or word puzzles that take only a minute, this is a pleasant daily warm-up, and it is handy for English learners who want to meet common sayings again and again. How do you play?
Read the proverb, type the missing word and press the button.
The word is shown as letter tiles: green means the right letter in the right place, yellow means the letter is in the word but elsewhere, and gray means it is not there.
You have five tries, and every miss opens a hint: the number of letters, the first letter, a pattern with the first and last letters, and then the first few letters.
When the round ends, the full proverb is shown so you can read it once more. Where do the proverbs come from?
The English page uses a list of more than 180 widely known proverbs, and the Korean page, for Korean speakers, uses its own list of more than 190 속담, because proverbs do not translate word by word.
Each page walks through its list in a fixed shuffled order based on the date on your device, so every visitor gets the same proverb on the same day and none repeats until the list is finished.
A countdown shows the time until the next one. Q: Are other answers accepted? A: One proverb has a common variant and both are accepted: man or one in time and tide wait for no man. Q: What is the emoji grid?
A: A row of green, yellow and gray squares per guess, without letters, so you can paste it to friends without spoiling the answer. Q: Is my progress saved? A: Yes, only in your own browser, along with your streak count.
The quiz is made for fun and language practice. Proverbs come in slightly different wordings from place to place, so if you know another version, take it as a nice talking point rather than a mistake.
Nothing you type is sent anywhere.
