About this tool

This stock market terms dictionary explains 162 words beginners meet on a stock screen, in plain language.

It covers basics, orders and trading, indicators, charts, accounts and tax, ETFs and overseas investing, and market slang in 7 groups.

Reading a quote screen: the bid and ask show what buyers and sellers are offering, the open, high, low and close show one day's range, and volume shows how many shares changed hands.

Order types: a market order fills quickly at the available price, while a limit order fills only at your price or better, so the two can give different results.

Indicators alone do not decide: PER, PBR, ROE and chart lines are each one clue, and the normal level differs by industry.

Taxes change: rules such as the securities transaction tax, dividend tax and the overseas stock deduction are revised from time to time, so check the National Tax Service or the Financial Services Commission.

You can pair this dictionary with the deposit interest calculator, the savings interest calculator and the percent calculator.
